Why it matters
Reproductive efficiency determines how effectively a livestock operation converts time, feed and breeding investment into productive animals. Poor fertility, extended calving intervals, pregnancy loss, difficult births and post-partum complications can increase breeding costs, prolong non-productive periods and drive involuntary culling.
Research in dairy and beef cattle shows that reproductive inefficiency carries substantial economic costs while also increasing the environmental burden associated with maintaining animals that are consuming resources without producing at their intended potential. Improving reproductive performance therefore supports productivity, herd longevity and more efficient use of farm resources.
