Why it matters
The liver plays a central role in nutrient metabolism, detoxification and productive performance, making metabolic health especially important in intensive production systems. Feed contaminants such as mycotoxins can affect the liver, kidneys, intestines, immunity and reproduction, often causing productivity losses before obvious clinical disease appears.
The consequences extend beyond the animal: contaminated feed can increase veterinary and feed-disposal costs, reduce farm output and, in some cases, create food-safety concerns through residues in animal-derived products. Protecting metabolic function and managing feed-related challenges therefore has implications for animal performance, profitability and the integrity of the wider food chain.
